medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The back pages of Cappelli's Dizionario di abbreviature latine ed italiane has a section: Sigle ed abbreviature epigrafiche. There is a fairly recent edition for sale.

Could T F be a half-erased Roman I (with cross-bars) E for IE(sus)?

If I understand you right, the inscription is somehting like
S^ MARI^
I
H
L
TF
XP
X(?)IHL is frequent for I(sra)H(e)L = Israel (see L. Traube, Nomina scara, 1907, pp. 106ss.), and XP (or XPC, XPS) for XR(ICTOC) = Christus. I have nothing, however, for TF and X(?) that would help to establish a coherent phrasing.
Kind regards, O.

Over Mary is written horizontally S (abbrev sign over) MARI (abbrev sign over) for SANCTA MARIA, and then vertically under the S the following letters: I H L TF (conjoined = some form of tuus filius?). Then XP, then probably X. Perhaps the S is meant to be read as part of the sequence.******************************
Does anyone have any suggestion how to interpret these letters? -- Paul
