I would suggest contacting Guy Selkeld (MoD Archaeologist) who I’ve found very helpful over aircraft crash sites. The contact details are in the leaflet that Roger Thomas sent.

Hmm, so if I know they’ve removed bits from the site, what should I do about it?

Hi Helen,

The Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 Andy mentioned in Section 2.1d says offences are with ‘any equipment in connection with the carrying out of any such excavation or operation’ (see http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1986/35/section/2<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.legislation.gov.uk%2Fukpga%2F1986%2F35%2Fsection%2F2&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cfff47ecb503641aa7bbd08d603730341%7Cbd2e1df68d5a4867a647487c2a7402de%7C0%7C0%7C636700189887793926&sdata=ROSVloZxYwkLbgo7HckC%2Fd9RklX%2BOiZcvyOPHXM9KGE%3D&reserved=0>), unless licenced.

The answer is still yes, a licence would be needed,

Thanks Roger,

Everything I’ve seen seems to be about excavation – I’m not clear whether metal detecting is allowed. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Subject: Aircraft crash sites

Hi all,

Does anyone know if a licence is required for metal detecting on a WW2 crash site? I’m told most of the plane was removed at the time, there are no live munitions. But they’ve found fragments of the aircraft and the farm manager previously found a section of the tailplane.

Thanks,
