Surely they are to be welcomed. They¹re bringing people to your venue. They¹re imparting knowledge, understanding and perspective some of which you may not have internally. How and why would you possibly prevent them doing this? I think museums need to understand that they are not the sole holders of the truth¹ and not the only storytellers about their collection. It might well be someone from a culture other than yours, who can provide real insights. It isn¹t a museum¹s job to police this storytelling. It is to encourage it, in many and diverse forms. For instance, if a school arrives for a self-directed visit at your site but has a cultural specialist with them who begins to deliver some sort of lesson or activity, or an adult group arrive with a tour guide not from your organisation. Do you have policies to cover this? If so in what situations is this okay, or not okay? And how do you address this if it happens? Is this something front of house staff would address, or would you call on someone else to deal with this? Is it a case of stopping it entirely or just clearly prioritising internal tours and sessions? Any/all advice and examples greatly appreciated.
