LATE DR. MANJU SINGH MEMORIAL YOUNG SCIENTIST BEST PAPER AWARD 2019

XIIth IGU Conference on “Climate Change, Natural Disasters and Sustainable Development” from February 22-24, 2019 at Panchkula, Haryana, India

 About the IGUYECG Task Force:

The IGU’s Young and Early Career Geographers’ Taskforce (IGU-YECG) was launched on 22 August 2016 at the 33rd International Geographical Congress in Beijing, China. The Taskforce Steering Committee comprises nine members and its primary aim is to stimulate young geographers to participate in IGU activities.

 IGU- YECG aims to promote career development for early career Geographers through mentoring, training and competitions; stimulate interdisciplinary, international and inter-generational research conversations between Geographers and acknowledge and elevate the achievements of early career geographers in the Global North and South.

About the award:

During the XIIth IGU Conference on “Climate Change, Natural Disasters and Sustainable Development” to be held from February 22-24, 2019 at Panchkula, India, IGU-YECG is organising special session(s) for young and early career researchers. There is a cutting-edge research by young and early career scholars internationally which deserves to be recognised and celebrated. The paper session(s) will present an opportunity for young scholars across the world to present their research in any relevant geography-related field. We invite papers from young scholars on the theme and sub themes of this conference. The award is instituted in the memory of Late Dr. Manju Singh, daughter of Prof. RB Singh. Dr. Manju Singh, a young and dynamic academic pursued her M.Sc. from USA and a PhD in nanotechnology from Italy. Prof. RB Singh, Vice President, IGU has been generous enough to provide financial support for this award.

Selected entries for IGU-YECG Late Dr. Manju Singh Memorial Best Paper Award will be evaluated by the jury during the oral presentation of the paper at the IGU-YECG conference session(s). Awardee will be selected and announced during the conference. The award includes a certificate of merit and monetary award of Rs 5100/-. No participation certificate will be given by the IGUYECG for all paper presenters. However, a conference paper presentation certificate will be given by the conference organisers.  The time and venue of the competition will be announced by the organisers of the conference. The name of the awardee will also be displayed on the official website of IGU-YECG.

Criteria for Application

Eligibility for the Young Scientist Paper Award is as follows:
   
   - Scholar should be the first author and personally present the paper at the conference;
   - MPhil/PhD/Postdoc scholars/Early Career Researchers within 5 years of PhD completion can only participate in the competition.
   - Discipline is not a boundary. Scholars from all the disciplines can participate with papers based on the theme of the conference.

Procedure of Application

Authors may express their interest in participating in the IGU-YECG Young Scientist Paper Award by submitting their full paper to Dr. Komali Yenneti (Chair, IGU-YECG) ([log in to unmask]) and Mr. Gaurav Sikka (Secretary and Treasurer, IGU-YECG) ([log in to unmask]) by November 30, 2018. Applicants are requested to mention the e-mail subject as “IGU Young Scientist Award 2019”

Submissions for IGU-YECG Young Scientist Paper Award will be reviewed by a panel comprising of IGU-YECG steering committee members and IGU Executive committee senior member. Only selected papers will be presented at the IGU-YECG Sessions during the conference.

Guidelines
   
   - Papers should be no longer than 5,000 words in length, excluding references.
   
   - Cover Sheet: Please attach a cover sheet to your submission, including your name, e-mail contact information, affiliation, paper title, and the word count of your paper (excluding references).
   - Formatting: 12-point font, A4 paper size, 1-inch (2.54cm) margins, 1.5 spacing, footer with page numbers.
   - References and Style: Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
   - Paper strengths: The most competitive papers will i) follow submission guidelines, ii) present clear and structured arguments, iii) situate a research question in appropriately cited literature, iv) answer the question with appropriate analysis, and v) be original, innovative, and draw conclusions of interest to the wider geography community.
