Dear colleagues,
may I kindly ask you to forward this advert for a fully-funded 3-year PhD Scholarship in Psychology to start October 2018 to interested graduates with backgrounds in psychology, methodology, social science and related fields.

Gender stereotyping in the university: Exploring influences on teaching evaluations

This Vice Chancellors Scholarship will explore if students have gender-specific expectations to their teachers and therefore judge male and female teachers' performances differently, although such differences may not be reflected in observable teaching behaviours. The project aims to investigate the ways in which students actually interpret and use teaching evaluation scales with a particular focus on possible gender-related biases. A better understanding of the social beliefs and knowledge that students apply when judging teaching quality can help devise evaluation methods that minimise implicit biases, improve gender equality and enhance accuracy. Such methods will also help to make teaching evaluations more comparable across teachers, disciplines and universities.

This exciting scholarship will draw on qualitative research methods (e.g., open-ended surveys or semi-structured interviews analysed with thematic or content analysis) as well as some statistical analyses. The successful applicant will have access to software to conduct online surveys for data collection in various formats, and, if desired, for video-based behavioural coding.
