Hello, they have a Carex-y look to me, with Carex inner seed for the smaller smooth ones.

[and always good to check with comparative material]

Subject: ID help with small seeds from Sweden

Dear all,

Could anyone please help me identifying these small seeds? They are small (less than one mm) and roundish flattened. Many of them have broken into halves before they got charred, like the two ones in the bottom row. On the left one (and also on the right one) in the upper row it is possible to see a slight shift in the surface structure where they would break.

They were found in a rather diverse sample from a medieval (13th century) oven. The sample included cereals (barley, rye, oats), weeds/ruderals and some grassland/hay fodder species.

Best wishes,

Per
