Subject: FW: Exam Invigilators

Hi

I have been passed your e-mail by a colleague as I am involved in the exams organisation at Solent University as they thought that I would be able to share some information. Please find below some answers to your questions, if you require anything else please just ask.

· Do you use Internal or External Staff or both?

Up until now we have used a combination of internal and external staff - Internal academics, who are involved in the teaching of units with exams, would be used for invigilation duties in main venues covering the duties of both Chief and Standard invigilators. We would then use external staff to cover any additional needs venues, these include extra time, separate venues, students using a PC, reading and scribing.

We are however for the coming academic year being required to use all internal staff for all invigilation duties throughout the academic year. This will include using more academic staff as well as admin staff from across all areas of the university.

· If external how do you recruit?

The external invigilators that we have used in the past were all employed by Reed recruitment with the specific role of carrying out invigilation duties. These ranged from retired members of university staff to older ladies and gents who have had training from us to carry out the various invigilation roles. The hourly rate paid by Reed for last academic year was £9.20 per hour.

· Do you have different roles i.e. Chief Invigilators, specific invigilators for PC exams

We have the following invigilation types:

Chief (main and additional needs venues - extra time and/or PC use)

Standard (main and additional needs venues - extra time and/or PC use)

Reader (additional needs venue on a 1-1 basis)

Scribe (additional needs venue on a 1-1 basis)

I hope this helps

Claire

Subject: Exam Invigilators

Hi

We are currently looking at our process for recruiting exam invigilators. We currently use a mixture of internal staff as well as a pool of external invigilators.

Would anyone be willing to share their process for recruiting invigilators:

· Do you use Internal or External Staff or both?

· If external how do you recruit?

· Do you have different roles i.e. Chief Invigilators, specific invigilators for PC exams

Any information you would be willing to share would be much appreciated. If you would be happy to include the rates of pay you pay for external staff that would also be really helpful.

I would be happy to receive direct responses if preferred.

Many thanks

Louise
