We are just the opposite at the U of Utah. Only one faculty member has been interested in the classroom edition, but researchers have been signing on – about 500 since Sept 2016.
Labarchives keeps pushing the classroom edition, but I cannot see any reason to spend the $$$.
-and the pdf/html issue is brought up on occasion.

Valerie,

Sorry this is so late but to your question 2, if you haven't seen it already Harvard has another Electronic Lab Notebook matrix at https://datamanagement.hms.harvard.edu/electronic-lab-notebooks that compares capabilities across tools from Evernote and OneNote to specific ELN software.

We currently have a license for LabArchives after evaluating 6 or 7 options for something discipline-agnostic, but there hasn't been consistent uptake or understanding of how best to use it at this point. From what I can tell it's being embraced as a classroom tool more quickly than in labs (which, as mentioned before, makes sense as it would disrupt their current workflows). And although it compared well against the other tools we were evaluating, there are still questions on some fronts, such as being able to get content (data) back out of the system in a format besides PDF or HTML.

Thank you for sharing the resources you've come across so far!

Hello All,

I just wanted to thank everyone who provided some thoughts on this.

For info his page was recommended by several people: https://www.gurdon.cam.ac.uk/institute-life/computing/elnguidance

No-one flagged up a specific lab notebook discussion forum so in the meantime we may post back to this list if we have questions or information to share.

Subject: Lab Notebooks

Hello All,

I have 4 questions:

1) Just wondering if anyone aware of public figures or could give an estimate of % lab notebooks that are paper based versus electronic - whether a formal lab notebook application or word, OneNote or such? Looking for indication for currently active research rather than all time.

2) We might be re-visiting electronic lab notebook tools. Any firm favourites that are not too subject specific? Realise discipline specialism is one issue. Watching Jisc RDDS on this too as they are in discussion with Lab notebook tools.

3) Anyone offering regular workshops or focus groups for staff or students on good lab notebook practice that might include how to keep paper lab notebooks or use electronic tools?

4) Anyone planning or interested in having a wider discussion on supporting lab notebook management in research organisations?

I found this interesting paper too https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5443717/

Many thanks

Hi Valerie,

Apologies for this slow response - I only found out about the discussion while I was on holiday, and today’s my first day back.

We did set up an ELN Discussion Forum <https://computing.group.gurdon.cam.ac.uk/elnforum/> which is accessible from the page you’ve listed below, but I’m afraid it’s a bit of an empty room at the moment. It’d be GREAT if we could encourage a critical mass of participants to start some meaningful conversations, and this might be such an opportunity, so please feel free to register and provide a starting point. Even if nobody else joins in, I promise that *I* will chat with you there!

I have no current evidence but my feeling is that, at least in HE life sciences research institutions, the majority of researchers acknowledge the benefits of ELNs and would like to adopt, but are held back by two things: 1) the bewildering range of products; and 2) the guaranteed period of disruption that deployment would bring. Without Institutional support and/or pressure, established PIs are mostly just too busy to research or commit to such a big change. New PIs are likely to be keen, and I’ve also seen individuals and small sub-groups of collaborators expressing interest, and this might be how the revolution will happen - a few enthusiastic advocates, scattered around the Institution, will generate broader interest. I *do* feel that we’re almost at a tipping point. I’ve been asked to give an internal seminar about ELNs - on one hand that’s frustrating because we only did the trial a year ago and most people said ‘meh’; on the other hand it’s great to see that interest is growing.

Regarding the range of products, I’ve been tempted in the past to recommend discipline-agnostic systems like OneNote and OneDrive (subject to institutional licensing and data storage agreements), to provide a basic documentation system that’s equally relevant to all disciplines and interests. It’s attractive because of its simplicity and flexibility, but that flexibility requires a well-managed and disciplined approach - I’ve seen it used very well in some labs; not so well in others. There *is* a ‘Classroom’ edition that provides collaboration and supervisor oversight of researchers’ activities, but it’s still hamstrung by some technical limitations - for example: it’s great that you can embed an Excel spreadsheet in the notes, AND that it can be launched by double-clicking, BUT it will only open in read-only mode. That might satisfy the interests of some, but I think it’s an inconvenience for most. So.. most researchers I know, who are interested, are still drawn towards the products that are designed/marketed towards their disciplines.

It’s probably easier to chat on the phone about this, and I’d be happy to share some more info about our trial and the outcomes - please feel free to call. Otherwise, if you have some specific questions that nobody else has answered, post again here and I’ll do my best.

Al

Thanks Al,

This all rings true with our experience – especially the meh – we looked at this 2012 and meh, 2016, and meh, and now renewed interest so trying again.

Would love to talk and maybe collaborate on why/how comms forum can be used, the various trials and established groups that we have.

I will contact you re possibility of a call and maybe we can also arrange a wider chat with the community as result.
