Press Office Assistant
Salary: £22,600 - £24,900

The Press Office Assistant will take responsibility for the logistics of this busy press office, enabling the SMC to efficiently run up to three press briefings a week. The right candidate for this job will be someone who wants a career in science communication but is prepared to start it by offering their exceptional organisational skills to support those on the front line. We're looking for a hard-working, outgoing individual who will thrive in a fast-paced environment where the ability to demonstrate initiative and keep a clear head will be essential. This is not a press officer's role, but everything you do will be aimed at supporting the team at the SMC ensure the news media get access to accurate, evidenced-based science when science is in the headlines.

Science Information Officer
Salary: £27,000 - £30,000

The Science Information Officer is a role that gives much needed support to a team of busy press officers dealing with news stories on anything and everything from genome editing to the future of plastics. Although not part of the press team, the role works closely with all members of staff, and manages our internship scheme - offering line management experience.
All life at the SMC revolves around our database of media friendly experts. With over 2000 scientists and 1000 press officers, the database is the lifeblood of the organisation in need of constant care and attention. You will have complete ownership of the database, and while detailed knowledge of databases is not necessary and there will be room to learn on the job, evidence of database knowhow or technical problem solving ability is a strong advantage.
You will also take responsibility for horizon-scanning issues that might hit the headlines, managing the SMC’s website and Twitter, researching and writing fact sheets on breaking stories hot topics, and supporting the Chief Exec by quickly getting to grips with scientific papers and preparing presentations.
The right candidate for the job will demonstrate the ability to maintain and improve our database, case about accurate coverage of science in the media, be able to take the initiative and work under pressure, enjoy taking ownership of projects and delivering them to support the media team, have great IT skills and an energetic and cooperative approach to work.
