GIS Specialist – Canal & River Trust

Job Purpose

We are looking for an enthusiastic GIS Specialist to join our GIS team at the Canal & River Trust. In this role you will assist in the delivery of a wide range of geospatial tasks from systems, data and solutions, through to the analysis and production of maps and reports to the Trust and its stakeholders. You will be expected to be a keen advocate of technology with a strong interest in how it can be utilised to improve business processes and maximise the benefits geospatial intelligence can bring the Trust. The role will play a key part in managing and maintaining core datasets and providing analytical outputs in a dynamic multi-disciplinary organisation. You will also be expected to provide support and training to resolve and reduce issues and empower all our colleagues to fully utilise the tools and solutions we make available, be these on desktop, web or mobile.

You need to have a proven track record of working with GIS in a business environment analysing large volumes of geospatial data and providing clear accurate and relevant outputs in a variety of formats.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Responsibilities
• Assist the GIS team with delivery, maintenance and development of all corporate GIS systems
• Focus on ensuring all our geospatial data holdings are maintained, to enable robust and accurate analysis and maximise benefit to the Trust
• Be able to define and document analytical processes, interpret outputs and prepare a wide range of written or graphical outputs in both printed and electronic formats
• Provide training to improve awareness, capability and competence in the use of GIS and related IT systems
• Proactively engage with colleagues to broaden awareness of geospatial intelligence and identifying and defining potential improvements to business processes in a complex multi-disciplinary organisation
• Manage the resolution of helpdesk incidents and assist with analysis and interventions to reduce future incidents
• Actively participate with the GIS and wider IT team in supporting the delivery of information systems across the whole of the Trust
• Assist with monitoring and compliance with relevant internal policy, legislation, copyright and licensing rules

Person specification

Essential criteria
• Degree qualified or equivalent experience.
• Detailed working knowledge of ESRI software stack.
• Ability to work with large volumes of data and produce accurate and consistent outputs.
• Experience of applying GIS principles within a business environment and interacting with multi-disciplinary project teams.
• Ability to write technical documentation.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to present information and complex processes in a clear and logical way.
• A high level of general IT literacy including desktop and mobile platforms.

Desirable Criteria
• Post graduate qualification in relevant discipline, e.g. MSc GIS.
• Experience of Python, HTML, Javascript and web technologies.
• Experience of working with Open Source Software.
• Experience of using a broad range of business information systems including SAP and MS SharePoint.
