Dear Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to invite you to a discussion meeting to celebrate the career of Barry Parsons, which will be held in Oxford on 13-14 September 2018.

An outline programme is set out below, and further details can be found on the COMET website<http://comet.nerc.ac.uk/barry-parsons-symposium/>.

Over the course of his career, Barry has been behind scientific advances in at least three areas: marine geophysics, mantle convection and continental tectonics. His observations, physical models, and insights have been used by researchers all over the world. To celebrate Barry's 70th birthday, the meeting will bring together colleagues, collaborators, students past and present, and the wider community to focus on ongoing research in the areas of oceans and continents, geophysical geodesy and earthquake science.

We are thrilled to have a fantastic line-up of keynote speakers covering all aspects of Barry's research career. These include Juliet Biggs (University of Bristol), Anny Cazenave (LEGOS), Claude Jaupart (IPG Paris), Peter Molnar (University of Colorado), John Sclater (Scripps Institution of Oceanography), Marion Thomas (ENS Paris), and Peizhen Zhang (Chinese Academy of Sciences).

There will also be a poster session so that everyone has the chance to present and share their latest scientific research.

There is a small fee to cover catering costs, so registration is required via the Oxford University Store<https://www.oxforduniversitystores.co.uk/conferences-and-events/earth-sciences/earth-sciences-department-events/rascomet-discussion-meeting-to-celebrate-the-career-of-professor-barry-parsons>. Registration is free for students, but they do still need to register. Places are limited due to the size of the lecture theatre, so early registration is recommended.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Oxford in September.

Best wishes,

Tim Wright
