Dear Colleagues,

Please consider submitting an abstract for the AGU fall meeting Fractures in Plutonic Rocks session (eLightning format), and pass this onto other colleagues who might be interested. Jen Eilis and Kerry Leith will be giving invited talks. The abstract deadline is 1st August.

Session Title: T021. Fractures In Plutonic Rocks
View Session Details:
https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm18/gateway.cgi

Plutonic rocks are pervaded by fractures, which are critical for studies of mineralization, geothermal energy, radioactive waste disposal, carbon capture and storage, and hydrocarbon resources. Yet geologists lack basic criteria to distinguish mechanisms of formation of fractures in plutonic rocks, and know rather little about fracture characteristics in plutons compared to sedimentary rocks. Hence, it may be difficult to separate thermally-induced, tectonic, and exfoliation fractures on outcrops, and to predict the likely sub-surface orientation, intensity and connectivity of fracturing. Contributions to this session are encouraged on fractures in any plutonic rocks, including:
1) Characterisation of fractures in plutonic rocks, from field and/or geophysical methods
2) Fracture formation, for example from field evidence and/or numerical modelling
3) Fracture systems and physical properties, for example by rock mechanics experiments or geophysical methods
4) Fractures in plutonic rocks for practical applications such as mineralization, geothermal energy, radwaste disposal, CCS and hydrocarbons.

For the first time, the AGU Fall Meeting will be held in Washington, D.C., where we will mark the launch AGU’s Centennial.  A wide variety of events are being planned that will take advantage of this special location that will showcase our science to the U.S. and international policy community, students, and public); leverage the local scientific community, including events with the Smithsonian, National Academies, and others; and, offer field trips to view the local geology and research institutes. The Fall Meeting will also offer more workshops as well as new Tutorial sessions to help students and researchers learn about new approaches and techniques and introduce exciting science in other disciplines.

Additional information, including everything you need to know about abstract submission is here:https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2018/.  Please consider submitting an abstract and/or attending to help show “What Science Stands For” and to join in an exciting and informative start to AGU’s Centennial. Submissions received by the early deadline of 25 July have a chance to win a $100 US gift card.”

The session convenors are Brian Collins, David Healy, Martin Zeigler and myself.
