Unfortunately I don't remember which cathedral or church it was, but I have a memory as a child of going around one such place with my family with an audio guide - the guide was of a small child who had some connection with the place that I've long since forgotten. But he was playing hide and seek (with us, perhaps?) and sharing with us life that was unfolding around him as he went, overhearing people talking and finding objects and notes that people had left. Through doing it we looked into things and behind things that we would never otherwise have touched or opened! I'm afraid I don't really remember the outcome of the story either, but just have this lingering memory of the excitement of getting to see places that you felt should have been forbidden.

The other religious building experience I remember was the Shrewsbury Quest just across from Shrewsbury Abbey. It was a walkthrough experience themed around Cadfael, and you were solving a murder. I remember having to hunt for particular herbs in the herb garden, and having to do some illuminated writing. You spoke to live actors along the way to collect clues too. At the end you had the chance to point the finger at the culprit, but I don't remember much else about the ending - it was the process that was the fun part. The experience hasn't existed for a very long time but I found a web pages about it here; http://www.cadfael.de/html/es-s-quest.html with pictures and here; https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/uk/centralengland/721701/Shrewsbury-A-hard-day-at-the-scriptorium.html in the news. I'd never heard of Cadfael as a child, but loved the interactive nature of the place.

Hope some of that might be of help!

Oh Lyndsey

You have just brought back one of my earliest heritage memories: a visit to Tewkesbury Abbey with my Mam (my Welsh grandmother) when I was about 10 so that makes it (cough cough cough) about the early 1980s...  It was a brilliantly hot day and we went into the Abbey and she bought me the printed children's trail booklet and we did it religiously, you might say.

One of the trail elements was to look closely at the fabulously gruesome cadaver tomb in the Apse and draw the worms and beasties into the appropriate blank space in the trail book (https://www.flickr.com/photos/ana_sudani/16601197625/).  My Mam and I spent a cheery half hour identifying and sketching the grubs and maggots.  Can't remember anything else about the trail except that, and the happy memory of sharing the time with my darling Mam, now long departed.

On a more helpful note - the geological heritage can be rather fun.  I don't know if anyone from the Forge Mill Museum/Bordesley Abbey Heritage Site is on GEM, but Earth Heritage Trust Hereford & Worcester did some lovely family friendly summer activities with them in about 2016 looking at the geology of the building stones of the Abbey building (now mainly ruins) which turned into batik art work (based on geology slices) and great canvas 'medieval wall paintings'.

All the best and thanks for bringing up the memories!

Hello lovely GEM people,

Has anybody come across any really great engagement for children / families at an abbey / church or monastery site? Or maybe you want to blow your own trumpet about your activities at a site like this? I’m doing some research into what’s great and what’s not and would love to hear about any examples you’d like to share 😊

Thank you

Lyndsey
