I know that many "conventional" graduate-school student gigs include the things in the service sector, such as baristas etc. During my Graduate career, I found that freelance writing provided a flexible source of income and also helped to practice writing skills and put something extra on a resume. It could be worth looking online for one-time or recurring writing opportunities, or reaching out to local online or print publications (disability-related or otherwise) to see if they are looking for paid columnists or article contributors. This type of work can be done remotely and, usually, pretty flexibly schedule-wise.

Hi Nicole,

Just offering a few more options for your student:

This website can be really helpful when looking for PhD funding options: www.postgraduatestudentships.co.uk

Leicester also have specific info about funding options (which no doubt the student has already found): https://www2.le.ac.uk/research-degrees/funding

I'm sure the student wants to avoid loans as best as possible but a new government loan scheme is now available for PhD students (I have no idea what the Ts&Cs of this scheme are, however, so I recommend a good comb through of the contract details). Details here: https://www.gov.uk/funding-for-postgraduate-study

I had funding for my PhD through an AHRC doctoral training partnership and it's been incredible (not least because, in addition to my stipend, there have been many additional pots of money that I've been able to apply for through the scheme to help with research costs and conference attendance). I've noticed that the application process for both the AHRC and ESRC doctoral training partnership funding competitions is now open for the Leicester bloc (details available here: https://www2.le.ac.uk/research-degrees/doctoral-training-partnerships) I cannot recommend this funding enough and would be happy to answer any questions the student may have about what it's like to be a student with funding from a doctoral training partnership.

Best wishes,
