John,

Looking at maritime records available on-line, it looks like JLK travelled out to the Cape after the Kiplings (who had departed just before Christmas), leaving only on 18 January 02 on the Avondale Castle.

(Quite why there is a pencil ‘Prof’ next to his name is unclear. The only other entries to get this were the Earl of Dartmouth, politician and soldier, and a Rev. Fletcher)

He returned with Rudyard and family and also Jameson (on the Walmer Castle, arriving on 27 March 02)

All the best

Dear Barbara,

Many thanks - I haven't got the book, but hoped that someone on the mailbase would have a copy -  that gives me exactly what I wanted.
    Yours, gratefully,

The Chronology of the recent book on John Lockwood Kipling indicates that

1898  JLK was in South Africa with Rudyard, sailing on 8 Jan and returning on 30 April.
1899, yes, that's New York and NY area (Feb to June)
Nov 1900 to late May 1901 with Alice in Italy for six months
winter 1901-2  Winter in South Africa--no further details about this trip

Hope this helps.
