Standardised assessments are widely used in research and applied settings, such as in the National Student Survey (NSS). But the ways in which people understand these tools and generate their answers to rating scales are still not well understood. This VC scholarship aims to investigate the ways in which students actually interpret and use teaching evaluation scales in different sciences.
The research will explore if students have gender-specific expectations to their teachers and therefore judge male and female teachers’ performances differently, although such differences may not be reflected in observable teaching behaviours. A better understanding of the social knowledge and mental processes students apply to judge teaching quality on quantitative scales can help devise evaluation methods that minimise implicit biases, improve gender equality, and enhance accuracy, and thus the comparability of teaching evaluations across teachers, faculties, and universities.
This exciting scholarship will draw on qualitative research methods as well as on statistical analyses and will involve investigations of teaching evaluations at different faculties. If desired, the successful applicant will also have access to software for video-based behavioural coding and online surveys for data collection in various formats, and they may also wish to conduct semi-structured interviews.
