It is widely recognized that immunization is one of the best investments not only for health but also for sustainable development. Despite the phenomenal impact of vaccination on the control and elimination of preventable diseases, some caregivers and health-care workers choose to delay or refuse vaccination. Vaccine hesitancy poses a threat to the health and well-being of Europeans and is one of the key challenges facing policy- and decision-makers, immunization programmes and communities. Vaccine hesitancy is highly context specific, with reasons for vaccine acceptance, delay and refusal varying considerably across the European Region. In this seminar, international experts will explore the historical, environmental, cultural and social contexts of vaccine hesitancy and consider its impact on immunization programmes today.
