Hi Christa

As your next-door neighbour, at AUB, we have to deal with the same local authority. I am checking what, if anything, has been agreed by AUB and the local authority with regard to "student content to be screened at open days, final shows or in any other forum where it might be seen by members of the public". I am not aware of any agreement, though presumably if BU have been approached, then AUB must have been too. The implication would be, surely, that someone at Poole Council needs to watch every film, animation, or artwork (and also look at all other artworks, photographs and artefacts that the students produce) that goes into all of the end of year shows or other forums you mention. That's not only "busybodying", as JP points out, but a ridiculous waste of time and money . . .

I do have direct experience of Poole Council and them wanting to check things: on occasion, AUB has been a venue for the British Animation Awards "Public Choice" touring show (three free-and-open-to-all screenings of shorts, the public vote on them in various categories). The council did contact me about this, and wanted to preview the material - this, I thought, was fair enough, as these were expressly "public shows" of animations (some of which were produced commercially - but, due to their format, tended not to have a BBFC classification). I sent Poole Council the DVDs and they sent back a U, PG etc rating for each one. It was all completely unproblematic as far as I could see

As I say, though, I think arranging a specific public screening of this sort of material is different from end of year shows and what have you . . . ?

best wishes

Paul

This strikes me as a case of ridiculous officiousness and busybodying, and definitely needs to be opposed. But a lot will depend on the attitude of those at the top of your university, especially the VC, and, sadly, not all such people have a good track record when it comes to standing up for freedom of expression. If you do want to fight it, I can recommend a good lawyer, and you should make good use of sites such as Open Democracy and The Conversation.
