ARLG East Midlands are pleased to be taking bookings for our next event on Reading for Pleasure in FE/HE. This event will include talks from a range of organisations including the Reading Agency and both FE and HE institutions. There will also be time set aside for networking and exchanging ideas!

Date & time: Thursday 28^th June, 2018, 9.30am-3.30pm (an optional tour of George Green Library is offered between 9:30am-10:00am with registration from 10:00am-10:20am).

Cost (inclusive of VAT): £35 ARLG or CILIP members and £40 for non-members.

The Reading Agency (Genevieve Clarke and Lynn Goodman)

Boosting achievement through reading for pleasure: At least 300,000 young people and adults have taken part in the Reading Agency's Reading Ahead programme over the last ten years, around a third through FE and sixth form colleges.  Genevieve Clarke from The Reading Agency gives an overview and Lynn Goodman, Librarian at Northampton College, explains the benefits for their students.

 

Leicester University (Harinder Matharu and Adam Smith)

Read at Leicester was launched to cultivate a reading community among our staff and students. We gift a copy of a selected text to all of our new undergraduates when they arrive at Leicester, with the book of choice being decided on by our staff and students. This year's winner was Naomi Alderman's dystopian thriller The Power. This year we've directly engaged with 1400 students through a variety of outreach events and activities related to the project and the novel, with the aim of fostering a reading community and better understanding how our students read. We'll be talking about our experiences with the project so far, what we've learned and its impact on student experience.

 

Lincoln College (Richard Stanton)

Richard will be talking about the Read-It Challenge which he and the reader development team developed and launched at Lincoln College. Its focus is to promote reading for pleasure amongst our FE and HE students as well as staff.  He will be talking about the launch, activities to promote the Read-It Challenge, recording participation, incentives and the development of an online staff reading group.  There is still a lot of work to be done to increase student uptake, but the numbers have slowly been increasing year on year.

 

Manchester Metropolitan University (Gopal Dutta)

Gopal will talk about the “Book Chat” pilot project he has led at Manchester Metropolitan University Library. He will begin by explaining what book chats are and how they differ from book clubs or reading groups, before detailing the full process behind the pilot: seeking management approval, partnering with the Health, Wellbeing and Counselling service, accessing training from a bibliotherapist, through to promoting and launching the Chats. The pilot had mixed results, with a poor turnout from students, but has captured the imagination of various staff around the University so further plans are afoot for the new academic year.
