The Examination Office conference is coming up in the next few weeks maybe this is our starting point regarding the issue of opening times for copying papers and the quantities that the examination papers are packed in from the awarding bodies.  We should bring this to the conference and pushed for some action.

It needs the action of both JCQ  and the awarding bodies to assist us all with this nightmare of a task that is not going to get any easier.

That’s a good idea Ros, but with 1200 students I’d have to be in at 5.00 am!  Seriously though, we do need to get to the papers much earlier, if not the day before.  We all have secure storage areas with safes that are inspected ever year, I don’t see why we couldn’t at least do the coloured papers the night before?  When I queried it with AQA, there answer was to start the exams at 9.30!  I agree with the others, maybe these people should come and spend a GCSE English or Maths morning with us so they can see the difficulties.

Thanks

I agree – this year has been horrible, nearly broken me and I have done the job for donkey’s years.  I have developed an over-reliance on sugar and a swearing habit that may never be undone.

I agree with Paula about the early opening of papers.  Do we need to start a petition??!  I think a sliding scale of cohort numbers versus the early opening time allowed would be sensible.  So if you have up to or including 200 candidates, 90 minutes – 400 candidates, 120 minutes – 600 candidates, 150 minutes – or whatever.  We all know JCQ write their regs mainly for schools and what we need is very different.

Any thoughts??

Hi

Yes we have exactly the same issues here.  One thing that could help is reviewing the early opening of papers.  The time given to split between up to 50 rooms and copying onto colour paper for many students is very challenging!

Hi everyone

I'm wondering how you have found this exam series?

Between myself and my colleagues in my office we have a ridiculous number of years experience but we have truly found this year to be the most horrendous to date!

I think there are numerous reasons for this ranging from (but not limited to)....

  • longer papers with ever increasing numbers of students with extra time including 50%
  • we have high numbers of students with complex access arrangements - as I expect most colleges do
  • shortage of appropriate rooming
  • students feeling increasingly 'entitled' and also likely to complain (we've had a student who was typing complain that they were distracted by the noise of another student typing!!!!!)

Obviously these are issues that we all face each year, but for some reason this year it's gone mad. There seems to have been a real shift this year in the complexity and intensity. We've also noticed a change in attitude from the students (and subsequently the parents). They seem very keen to question/complain about every little thing - which obviously they should if something is wrong - but complaining because someone over the other side of the hall blew their nose or because a student left the room at the end of their exam (it distracted them apparently!) is driving us mad - and don't even get me started on the requests to be seated separately due to anxiety!

I'd be keen to hear your experiences of this series, if nothing else it would be nice to know that we aren't alone in thinking that this year has been awful.

Kind regards

Katie.
