Dear colleagues,

Apologies in advance for cross-posting.

The UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Ms. E. Tendayi Achiume, will be convening a civil society consultation on Europe on Tuesday 3 July 2018 from 13h00 to 14h30 in Palais des Nations Room XI. This will take place alongside her first presentation before the 38th session of the Human Rights Council.

She would like to hear and exchange views with stakeholders from Europe regarding:

l  Trends and manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in the European region and globally;

l  Key trends, issues and challenges in the fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in the wider European region;

l  Efforts and experiences in combatting racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in the current era;

l  Key changes in European legal, policy and political landscape that have positively or negatively impacted racial equality work in the region;

l  Emerging effective strategies for combatting racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in the present era; and

l  Suggestions on how international human rights actors, especially the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Racism, can better advance the racial justice goals of local and national advocates to impact communities in Europe

In addition, she would like to have a discussion on the topic of her first thematic report to the General Assembly to be presented at its 73rd session (October 2018), which will address the impact of populist nationalism on racial equality and related human rights concerns.

For further information including modality, accreditation and written inputs, please refer to the attached concept note.

The deadline to confirm your participation is Monday 25 June.

Please do not hesitate to share this with anyone from civil society in Geneva/ Europe who would be interested.

Kind regards,

Taisuke
