Hi all,

Please see revised version with images.

Windrush 70th Anniversary – celebrations and events at Wolverhampton Art Gallery

Join us to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks, marking the start of African-Caribbean migration to Britain in the post-war years.

Windrush 70
9 June – 29 July
Free exhibition

Windrush 70 features a projected slideshow of photographs by acclaimed photographer Nick Hedges, showing Caribbean workers in Black Country industries in the 1970s, as well as previously unseen photographs capturing the community spirit in Caribbean churches in the Wolverhampton region during the same period.
Paintings by locally-based Jamaican artist Sylbert Bolton are also on display, along with vintage video footage of Wolverhampton’s African-Caribbean Achievers Awards, and recorded memories of some of the people who arrived in Britain from the West Indies in the post-war period.

A Charmed Life: film screening and Q&A
Sat 23 June 2 – 4 pm

A special 'Screening of A Charmed Life', followed by Q&A with director Patrick Vernon OBE.

This thought-provoking film tells the story of Eddie Martin Noble, the Jamaican-born RAF man who was the inspiration for Andrea Levy's award-winning book, Small Island.

Noble was stationed in East Anglia during the second world war and his autobiography Jamaican Airman explored his wartime experiences and the harsh realities of being a black man living in Britain during the 1950s.

The film raises issues about the legacy of the Windrush Generation in Britain and was the catalyst for the Windrush Day Campaign, which Patrick Vernon set up in 2013.

Admission is free. Places are limited to 100. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Best wishes,
Carol
