Hi,

We do not use VLC as our University solicitors are of the view “that it would be most unwise and risk reputational damage for the University to be promulgating software, especially freeware, that could enable staff or students to use the University’s network and computers for the purposes of piracy.”

One of our contractors pointed out that the VLC FAQ (https://wiki.videolan.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions) does state that the end-user is responsible for complying with licensing and royalty requirements, so the playing of DVDs (or streaming of MPEG-4 content) using VLC might require a one-off per-computer license fee of $0.50 to ensure compliance (see http://www.mpegla.com/main/programs/M2/Pages/Agreement.aspx for details).

We are rolling out Windows 10 with new hardware, most of which do not have CD/DVD drives. However the lectern PCs have CD/DVD drives and we have licensed PowerDVD for these specific machines.

If anyone has suggestions for alternatives we'd be interested to hear.

Kind Regards,
Matt

All of you using VLC, how are you rationalizing the legal situation?

Thanks,
Lisa.
