These were used in various addressing machine systems, the 1930s – 70s equivalent of mail-merging. Commonly found types are Addressograph and Roneo machines. There was usually a stamping machine with a keyboard
for creating the zinc tokens (like these) and a separate spirit-based printing machine into which they were dropped. They’d print a single envelope from each tag and then move on to the next – see

Hi all,
A number of these metal address tags (with London addresses) were found in a back garden in Bootle (Merseyside).
One of the people was living at the address in 1945. Bootle was heaving bombed in the Second World War which may or may not be relevant.
Has anyone seen any similar items?
