Hi Neil,

I am no expert on this at all but there have been similar threads about such audits in the past and I have seen a lot of people raising words of caution.

The process can be extremely time consuming and complex. In the past people have reported poor and disproportionate response rates from across the organisation and at the end of the process they may have found a few great case studies but generally reaffirmed what they already knew; that levels of understanding about engagement are pretty poor across the organisation and that there is not enough funding, support or training available.

What I have seen done at UCL by our central Public Engagement Team, which has seemed to be more targeted (and I am sure is only part of a much bigger process), is that they have gone out to those people they know about who are doing good work and have targeted those of us across UCL with a role for advising/delivering on PE. Thorough discussion groups and similar they have used us to help them unpick what is happening on the ground and what we feel is needed.

I have never tried to do an audit of this and I am not familiar with EDGE but am sure it is a great tool, however, I thought this would be useful to share.

Best

Andi

Subject: [PSCI-COM] PE audit experience and wisdom

Dear all

We are considering an institution-wide Public Engagement audit, to help us develop our PE strategy.

I’d be very grateful to hear any wisdom and experience from list members, both in terms of general management of the process, and more specific items such as questions to include and their wording.

Our current thoughts are that it would be accompanied by in-house publicity and a high profile launch event, and we would plan to reach all staff.

I have also posted this on the NCCPE-PEN forum.

Thanks

Neil
