Hi Henry,

Julian Carter has copied me in to your message sent earlier this week. As Chair of Sustainable Forum at Amgueddfa Cymru National Museum Wales I would like to note our interest in being included in some kind of network/discussion on how we support a shift towards a more sustainable future.

The museum has a Sustainable Forum that meets quarterly, we have recently agreed that we will use the Museum Environmental Framework (Arts Council England/Julie’s Bicycle) to capture best practice at AC NMW and help us to identify areas of improvement. Some of us also participated last month in Carbon Literacy training, and I hope to be able to roll this out further throughout the organisation. As part of this we had an interesting discussion about using the collection to highlight climate change and consider environmental themed programme of temporary exhibitions across AC.

Hope you have a good trip

Best wishes

Hi Ann

This posting from Henry Mcghie may be of interest – Henry was part of the document that Trevor recently shared on museums and sustainability.

Subject: Are you/your museum/networks interested in accelerating climate action and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals?

Hello I'm off to the UN in Bonn next week for a workshop on accelerating climate action worldwide. One of my 'arguments' is that museums have such tremendous potential to help support the shift towards a more sustainable future, as there are 55,000 or more worldwide, they support lifelong learning, they can bring together partnerships, and their collections can (and will need to be developed to continue to) support specialist exploration of a changing natural environment. They just need to want to do it.

So, here's the question- what appetite is there for some kind of supportive network or group to help us all accelerate climate action and the wider Sustainable Development Goals, through our programming and use of our collections? How we run our operations should be 'covered' through reporting to ACE. Are you interested? Curious? Want to do more but maybe don't know quite how? Not sure how your programming and collections could help the movement.

Just send me a quick email if you're a) interested in connecting with climate and sustainability action and b) if you would like to see some kind of network. I won't mention any names/institutions at the UN, but it would help me understand what we need to do next. Any funders out there who want to put some money towards this, let me know.

For interest, Article 12 of the Paris Agreement is on public engagement and action (the initiative is called Action for Climate Empowerment), and museums also all have something to offer to the Sustainable Development Goals.

In the meantime, you could join up/follow the Coalition of Museums for Climate Justice (mainly in Canada), and/or the Museums and Climate Change Network (worldwide).

All the best,

Henry
