CALL FOR PAPERS

Notions of borders are part of the academic discourse already since a long time ago, with the academic interest to have been reignited during the past few years as a result of the crisis, or better, of the crises, taking place at a global level. Borders, boundaries and margins are no longer defined merely geographically, but also socially, financially, linguistically, culturally and artistically and are characterized by parameters that are connected and interlinked.

In today’s globalizing world, where societies are formed from individuals from different cultural backgrounds, the need to promote intercultural dialogue becomes imperative. Equal participation in cultural life and respect to different cultural identities are not only democratic, but fundamental human rights. The concept of democracy in culture is enriched with the safeguarding of the democratic quality of the citizens and their participation in the cultural life, with the existence of open common communicative spaces and the creation of new ones, and with the expansion of culture in international relations.

The conference aims to investigate the notions of borders and margins in contemporary dance and discuss the elements that create, define and reshape them.

Its interdisciplinary nature aims to bridge the gaps and instigate dialogue between disciplines, academic fields, artists and creators; its broad thematic covers, but is not limited to, the following areas:

• artistic creation

• dance and its relation to other art forms

• intercultural dialogue

• creative migration • cultural diversity

• free movement (e.g. for political and/or social reasons), etc.

The conference will take place in Chania, Crete, Greece on the 21st and 22nd of July during the 8th Dance Days Chania festival. We welcome abstracts of up to 400 words excluding references and a short bio to [log in to unmask] until the 13th of May 2018. Notifications will be sent on May 23rd.

Registration fee is €50- and €30- for students. Fee includes the conference pack, coffee and refreshments during breaks.
