Isn’t this a classic case of unintended consequences? Does anyone really believe that there’s a vast pool of people who don’t have the right to work in the UK queuing up to be External Examiners? But for this to apply the check must be made before the employment starts. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2007/3290/article/5/made Unless an institution has doubts about the status of an EE after appointment, any time, cost and effort spent chasing after documentation after the EE starts work is a complete waste for everyone involved (except, perhaps, for bloated bureaucracies that need to create work to justify their existence.) Dear all, In conjunction with HR we are reviewing our processes for checking ‘right to work’ – at present we ask examiners to bring their passports the first time they visit us, which might be the Board itself or earlier to meet with colleagues from the academic department they are working with. We understand that we should be collecting ‘right to work’ information as soon as the appointment is concerned and we think we need to arrange a Skype or equivalent call with the examiner to see them with their passport and then have a scan sent to us to sign to say we have seen the original. Is this roughly in keeping with that others are doing or have experienced, please? Thank you so much!
