Subject: NHS 70/Windrush Awards

Dear colleague,

The NHS will be turning 70 on 5 July 2018. Two weeks before the NHS was launched, on the morning of 22 June 1948, the former German cruise liner Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks carrying 492 passengers from the West Indies.

Some of the passengers were the first people to also work in the new NHS, black and minority (BME) people have worked in the NHS since its inception.

In the years that have followed many more people from around the world have come to work in the NHS and made a significant contribution to the service.

Today, people from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds make up a fifth of the NHS workforce with over 200 plus nationalities represented.

To celebrate our diverse workforce, we have launched the Windrush 70 awards which will take place on Tuesday 12 June in Manchester and nominations are now open.

The 11 categories will recognise a range of achievements, breakthroughs as well as recognising the unsung BME heroes, who under normal circumstances, would perhaps be overlooked.

Nominations can be made by anyone working in the NHS, patients, service users and the public.

Taking part

You will need to register on www.windrush.crowdicity.com, using an existing email address and choose a user name.

Make a nomination

In each category, you can nominate someone who you would like to see recognised for their work in the NHS.

They may be a colleague or they may have cared for you or a member of your family. This is a chance to say thank you to them. Please tell us why you would like to nominate them.
We would like to hear inspirational stories of outstanding patient care and making a difference.

The closing date for submitting nominations is Friday 13 April

Support a nomination

After the nominations close on Friday 13 April, you can support your favourite nominations. On the platform, each user has up to 50 chances to support nominations, by a single click. You may wish to use your support across various categories or you can use as you choose.

Shortlisting

The shortlist will be made up of the most supported nominations. Users will be able to see what nominations have gone through to be shortlisted. The person nominating will receive an email informing them of their nomination getting shortlisted. The winners in each category will be announced at the awards ceremony in Manchester on the evening of Tuesday 12 June.

Registration for the event in June will open in the coming days.
