Following the retirement of the previous post holder, Hull History Centre is looking for a qualified archive conservator in a full-time (37 hour), permanent post to undertake all aspects of archival preservation and conservation work.

Hull History Centre is a partnership between Hull City Council (acting through Hull Culture & Leisure Ltd) and the University of Hull. The building opened in 2010, and incorporates a bespoke and comprehensively equipped conservation studio. We attained Archives Accreditation in 2017 and the building receives 25000 visits a year.

We hold archives of local, regional, national and international importance, dating back to the 11th century, as well as the City's comprehensive local studies collection.

The post holder will be employed by Hull Culture & Leisure and managed by the City Archivist, but will work across all collections at the History Centre.

As Conservator, you will assess, plan, undertake and record conservation work on archival material including parchment, paper, maps, plans and photographs. You will manage the preservation of the archive and local studies holdings, including cleaning and repackaging material together with oversight of the building's environmental conditions. You will train and supervise staff and volunteers working in preservation techniques, and support colleagues in the preparation of exhibitions.

You will have a recognised qualification in conservation, and be, or be actively working towards becoming a registered member of the Archives and Records Association or the Institute of Conservation (ICON). You will have good organisational and time management skills, an ability to work independently and to exercise professional judgement.

You will work with the History Centre Management Team to plan preservation of and access to the archives and local studies collections.
