Shirley,

I have 2 FRCPath clinical biochemists who take lipid clinics.  I set this up with the consultant in diabetes and lipidology a couple of years ago.  Following a period of training the biochemist now takes the clinic as a clinician, but in an environment where the medical consultant is also seeing patients (in a different consulting room).  If there are any issues outside the competence then the medic is available.  Clinical Scientists cannot prescribe and PGDs have a limited role in these clinics.  Therefore any modification in prescription (dose, additional prescription, statin changes etc) have to be undertaken by the medically qualified clinician (on the recommendation of the Clinical Scientists). It is unfortunate that it is taking so long for FRCPath qualified Clinical Scientists to become non-medical prescribers, where other professions are able to prescribe.

The model is a type of interdependent clinic delivery and has been successful.  I see one of the future roles of clinical scientists as expanding into patient-facing clinics, especially in long term conditions. The interdependent clinics is a deliverable first step.

Am happy to share the details of exact roles and I am sure that the biochemists would be happy to share their experience.  We are writing a little article for the ACB news.

Dear Collective Brain

A few years ago, when Modernising Scientific Careers was in its infancy, I attended a meeting in which Sue Hill spoke about how we, as Clinical Biochemists were extremely good at what we do but we needed to be more visual and work with our medical colleagues to deliver patient care.

So, can I ask if there are any non-medical Clinical Biochemists who either work alongside their medical colleagues or work with other Health Care Scientists to deliver regular out-patient clinics? Is this something we should be moving towards? What are your views/concerns? The pharmacists have made this transition so why haven’t we?

It would be useful to know what’s happening around the UK.

Many thanks

Shirley
