There is an ongoing UK project being led by NHS England to allow Clinical Scientists to supply and administer medications under Patient Group Directions. For those who are not quite sure what this means, more details can be found at https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/mpg2

The ACB has been closely involved in the development of the case, which will cover all Clinical Scientists. One of the example scenarios will involve dynamic function testing by a Clinical Scientist, but if the case is approved any use of PGDs in line with NICE guidance will be possible. The ACB will encourage sharing of examples of the use of PGDs by Clinical Scientists in due course.

There will be a separate case for Biomedical Scientists. Both cases will go out to public consultation in the next few months.

Best wishes

Ian

There’s an interesting article on how one group of healthcare scientists are approaching this - Jan Biomedical scientist<http://thebiomedicalscientist.net/science/advanced-roles-biomedical-scientists>
Jane Needham is leading on this for the IBMS

I challenged ACB three years ago on this issue it was taken to Clinical Practice Section committees in the ACB but no interest. See attachment

I've also asked for information on exactly what prescribing health scientist will do. No detail in response

Come on collective

Hi Shirley,

As clinical biochemists we often work very closely with the endocrinology team on dynamic function tests and other specialist investigations.

For over 10 years, myself and my clinical scientist colleagues at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital supervised a regular clinic on behalf of the endocrine team.

An FY1 took the bloods and gave the drugs but everything else was done by clinical scientists.

The results were then presented at the Endocrine MDT meeting with notes written up by biochemistry staff.

In my experience having clinical scientists directly involved in these tests ensures the correct protocols are followed and samples are collected correctly.

With detailed clinical knowledge of rare endocrine disorders, clinical scientists can often ask the patients the right questions to help with the history that junior medics may not.

Regular patient contact for clinical scientists is also very valuable for developing higher level clinical advisory skills.

I have moved on now, but this clinic may still be going on the Good Hope Hospital site.

Dear Collective Brain

A few years ago, when Modernising Scientific Careers was in its infancy, I attended a meeting in which Sue Hill spoke about how we, as Clinical Biochemists were extremely good at what we do but we needed to be more visual and work with our medical colleagues to deliver patient care.

So, can I ask if there are any non-medical Clinical Biochemists who either work alongside their medical colleagues or work with other Health Care Scientists to deliver regular out-patient clinics? Is this something we should be moving towards? What are your views/concerns? The pharmacists have made this transition so why haven’t we?

It would be useful to know what’s happening around the UK.

Many thanks

Shirley
