Dear YGS Members

Further to the pdf version of our Circular 614 distributed yesterday,
please find below some additional, updated details of three activities
taking place on Yorkshire Geology Day, 21st April that we anticipate
will be of particular interest to members.

10.45AM CAPHOUSE COLLIERY UNDERGROUND TOUR led by experienced coalfield
geologist and sedimentologist Paul Guion. Group size will be restricted
to a maximum of 15 and places must be booked on arrival ON THE DAY at
the Museum Reception Desk. Please wear stout footwear and appropriate
outer clothes that will withstand a bit of mud and dust. Note that there
will be a second underground tour led by a member of the Museum staff at
11.15am.

10.30AM TO 1-00PM BOOK SIGNING BY COLIN SPEAKMAN. Colin will be signing
copies of the new edition of his fascinating biography _Adam Sedgwick -
Geologist and Dalesman_. You can buy a copy on the day or bring along an
already-purchased copy and have it signed by the author! There will be a
second opportunity to get a signed copy during the refreshments break
(15.15 to 15.45) in the afternoon ('Quakes and Shakes') programme.
Online book sales at: http://www.yorksgeolsoc.org.uk/book.php

12.00PM SURFACE GEOLOGICAL WALK LED BY DR JOHN KNIGHT AND DR ANDY HOWARD
(45-60 minutes). Walk from the Museum Main Entrance to Hope Pit to see
exposures of the Flockton Thick Coal and overlying roof strata
containing ironstone nodules and a non-marine 'mussel band'. Features of
the local coalfield landscape and the remediation challenges and
geothermal energy opportunities presented by mine water will also be
demonstrated. Comfortable walking shoes and weatherproof clothing
recommended. Total walking distance about 2km along paved service roads
and paths, no significant inclines or steps.
