There was no industry standard pattern for these. I have seen them literally as big blocks of unformed stone with chains and clasps. The flatness of the clasp can sometimes be seen in early handcuffs. Attached is my example, but see also:-

Thank you for your replies and links. The flat section of the shackle is what's confusing me, if it was attached to a wall, why would you need to ball and chain??

Looks like it could it have been for prisoners?

 

Grimly, I would have thought a longer tether for animals to graze etc.

Hi,

I am hoping the social history hive mind can help with this one. See the attached ball, chain and shackle found during renovation works in a garden in west Warwickshire. The area is known for needle and nail manufacture, if that helps.
