Open consultation on subject-level TEF
The Department for Education (DfE) is inviting responses to a technical consultation to inform the development of the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF)
at subject level. The intention to undertake TEF assessments at a disciplinary (subject) level was set out in the white paper ‘Success as a knowledge economy’ (May 2016). The purpose, therefore, of this consultation is not to determine whether to proceed to
subject-level assessment, but how to do so in the best and most proportionate way. The consultation runs alongside the
TEF Year Three Subject Pilot. The pilot is testing two models for generating subject and provider level ratings.
The Society will be responding to the consultation on elements appropriate to geography. We need your input. Please send any comments, to inform our response, to
Catherine Souch by Friday 4 May. The consultation documents are available
here. For a more detailed discussion of the topics in this document please refer to the accompanying
technical document (PDF).

Represent Geography with the British Science Association
The Society is seeking applications, or nominations, from UK geographers to take on the role of Recorder of the British Science Association. The role involves organising a small number of ‘geography’ events at the annual
British Science Festival. The Festival, the longest standing of its kind in Europe, aims to connect the public with scientists, engineers, technologists and social scientists.
Each year, there is an inspiring programme of free events over four to five days, with exciting opportunities to get involved. The talks, workshops and drop-in events span a diverse range of subjects that encompass science in the broadest sense. Last year’s
event was held in Brighton; the next one will be in Hull. There’s lots of support from the Society and local departments. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact
Catherine Souch by the end of April.
