Hi Orly, could you please send this round the women and politics group? thank you ever so much, Heather

Experiencing trolling in academia

As academics we are encouraged to disseminate our work through a variety of mechanisms, and this has been given greater emphasis in the REF demand for impact. Yet evidence suggests that women are much more likely to receive abuse as a result of their dissemination, particularly on social media. The aim of this survey is to gather information about a diversity of women academic's experiences of abuse online, trolling, particularly as a result of putting their work in to the 'public sphere'. I am particularly concerned to explore experiences of sexist and racist trolling and the impact and effect that this has on female academics.

I will use the data to inform a paper I have been commission to write about online abuse towards, and the trolling of, women academics. I am interested in your experiences and reactions to the abuse, as well as the nature of the abuse.

I leave the definition of 'abuse' or trolling, open to you, but I am concerned to capture what has happened, how it made you feel, the impact this has had on our personally and in terms of your career, and what if anything you think can be done to prevent this.

Please note all experiences will be treated anonymously (unless desired or express permission is given). For further details on how I have previously recorded sensitive experiences of female academics please see my articles on women, sexism and academia in 'Gender & Education' and 'Gender, Work & Organisation'

If you have any questions or would like to contact me further please do so at [log in to unmask]

Thank you very much for your time
Heather
