medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and cultureLast Thursday, 19 April, was the feast of St Expeditus, who is invoked against procrastination. According to legend he was a Roman centurion from Armenia martyred in the Diocletian persecution. When he decided to become a Christian, the devil took the form of a crow crying "cras! cras!" (tomorrow! tomorrow!), but Expeditus stomped on it and declared "hodie!" (today!). He is also invoked for urgent needs. Sorry, I meant to post this earlier.******************************There are also urban-legendy stories that some nuns once received a package of relics marked "Expedite" to ensure speedy delivery and thought this was the name of the saint. Read about it here:For urgent needs there is a novena to Saint Expeditus. Is it too late to start now?:--Paul Chandler, O.Carm.
