At £70 it’s a snip (or a snap).

Please note that this message is from outside of the organisation.

I’m sure Amy who placed the original query feels thoroughly supported, and that many of us know all too well of the tribulations eloquently expressed by Frank.

And for anyone wanting an update on our Poundland staplers when I thought I’d possibly jinxed them by even mentioning that they were still working – they are still fine today and happily gambolling on the stapler table.

I would second Frank’s comments to you Angela.

If we don’t have something constructive to add to a lis-link post on a topic that is of real operational importance to a colleague, I think the more courteous and supportive course of action is to just not respond.

We all enjoy a good laugh in the world of libraries at some of the idiosyncratic behaviours and unreal expectations from our library users, but it’s not usually at the expense of fellow professionals.

Best wishes from another small, specialist, HEI library whose team’s current bugbear is finding a reliable A3 comb binder,

Dear Angela,

I think people were wrong – even rude – to laugh and scoff. It is an ongoing issue and there is solace in knowing that other institutions are grappling with the same problem.

We had the issue here when the stapler we provided went “walk-about” and had been missing for a while.

When I put a call out to the students to return it, no questions asked, I was ridiculed no end, in what came to be known as Stapler-gate.

And yet, when others came in to use the stapler and I explained that it was no longer available there was merry hell to pay.

And it isn’t just staplers. Students seem to expect all sorts of supplies to be made available to them:

sellotape, tippex, pens, scisssors, even paper. When one student goes and helps themselves to a piece of A4 from the copier it seems churlish to take them to task.

But if all of them start doing it and taking as much as they like then the paper bill soon racks up.

So I for one am delighted you raised the issue and have been interested to see the replies from other institutions.

And maybe the answer in the end is that we have to grin and bear it, but at least we do so knowing that many others are doing the same.

Well… it’s a library discussion list and care and retention of library staplers are a popular topic as evidenced by the links shared here.  And the time spent on sorting out staplers that work is of nothing compared to the time spent explaining to students why we didn’t have one available when they were withdrawn temporarily…

Perhaps it should have been left for a Friday afternoon J

I am sorry, but just read these emails out to my husband, and we both fell off our chair-laughing. Is this really an issue to ask for help on.
Sorry, but hilarious

> We have shared the regular problems of staplers going missing, being broken, or just wearing out very quickly. It doesn't seem to matter how expensive/ hardwearing they are, they all lasted a few weeks at best before coughing up a tangle of staples and expiring or vanishing. Here they are fixed down through attaching to PC security cables that have a simple metal loop at each end to attach to table legs at one end and the stapler at the other. Some staplers have loops so these can be attached, but more often we were getting Facilities to drill a hole in the stapler to attach a small screw. It wasn't an ideal fix, but as the staplers only lasted weeks at best, it did the job. I did try using chains from Homebase, but these proved to be no match for a determined student.

> We found a supplier of cheap, reliable staplers that have now been going for over 6 weeks, are easily unjammed if someone's hit them a bit hard, and take 26/6 staples for normal stapling. The supplier is... Poundland. The staplers look quite flimsy but this turned out to be a boon as students are being more careful with them. Documents up to 10 sheets are fine - we also have a big heavy-duty stapler for thicker documents, but generally if neither of those suit students are using the hole punches. To fix them to the security cables I bought some luggage combination locks with the thinnest loops we could find; with a bit of care these fit through the hinge at the back of the stapler. They've been doing several hundred documents a week each judging by how often we have to refill them, and no-one has tried to steal them as it's obvious they wouldn't be worth anything on any underground stationery market! Asda staplers (£2 and much chunkier) are also good for the money, plus the hinge at the back has more space to fit a security chain or other attachment through.

Can anyone share any tips for efficiently and effectively providing staplers for use by customers?
