With immense sadness I pass on the message about the death of our former Durham collegue, Peter Macardle. Peter retired to France in 2013 where he spent "years of deep contentment” as he "built, decorated, wired, plumbed, travelled, and burrowed deeper and deeper into French culture"  as he wrote in an email a month ago. Last year, he had started to go back to academic work  to finish a follow-up on his seminal book on the music and performance of the St Gall Passionplay, a monumental book on the Frankfurter Dirigierrolle and the Frankfurter Passionsspiel. This new volume which was nearing completion when in January he was diagnosed with incurable cancer.
Those who knew him, valued his deep learning, sense of humour and collegiality; if you would like to contact his widow, Fiona Macardle, I’m happy to pass on her address or to forward messages to her via email.
