May 11, 2018 *POLITICS IN THE FACE OF DEATH* *An Interdisciplinary Workshop at the University of Edinburgh* *Outline* From migrants facing death at borders around the world, to the different chapters of the “War on Terror”, to the politics of post-genocide, our era seems to be marked by the constant politicisation of death. Social and physical death are increasingly intertwined in various spectacles of horror. Clearly, not all deaths are treated equally. Trenchant questions remain over what kinds of death are deemed morally, political and legally significant – and what kinds of death are rendered invisible. This conference will try to approach these complex issues, by bringing together scholars from different disciplines to examine the global politics of death. *Speakers* - Prof Banu Bargu (UC Santa Cruz) <https://histcon.ucsc.edu/faculty/singleton.php?&singleton=true&cruz_id=bbargu> : *Dying-in: Politics of Life, Theaters of Death* <https://histcon.ucsc.edu/faculty/singleton.php?&singleton=true&cruz_id=bbargu> - Prof Neve Gordon (Queen Mary, University of London) <http://www.law.qmul.ac.uk/staff/gordon.html>: *“Hospital Shields” and the Limits of International Law* - *Dr Charles Heller and* Dr Lorenzo Pezzani <https://www.gold.ac.uk/architecture/staff/> (Goldsmiths, University of London): *Violence and Anti-Violence at the EU’s Maritime Frontier* - Dr Laura Major (University of Edinburgh) <http://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/staff/social_anthropology/laura_major>: *Akin to Dead: Exhuming the Human Remains of the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda* - Prof Achille Mbembe (University of the Witwatersrand) <https://wiser.wits.ac.za/users/achille-mbembe>: *Necropolitics Revisited* - Dr Claire Moon (London School of Economics) <http://www.lse.ac.uk/researchandexpertise/experts/profile.aspx?KeyValue=c.moon%40lse.ac.uk> : *Last Rights: Forensic Deathwork and the Human Rights of the Dead* The detailed conference programme, including the abstracts, can be found here: *https://goo.gl/WXXfVr <https://goo.gl/WXXfVr>* *Participation* Participation is free of charge, but the number of places is limited.
