I am trying to read Sutherland's 1st collection, this morning. I'm not sure if I'm being stupid, but it reads like an incoherent porno, except without the actors.

Here is a link to a review of it. It’s called White Hot Andy.

I can’t seem to find anywhere online any negative criticism of it. So maybe it is better than Eliot’s oeuvre after all. Mind you there aren’t that many reviews, and most of them seem to be written by people connected with The Chicago School of poetry, which a few years ago had a collective fan mania for UK avantgarde poetry written specifically by Cambridge undergraduates and postgraduates. Kent Johnson was big in promoting these poets, especially, Sutherland. I think because they were more "political" than the poets he hated, such as the Langpo crowd (who he thought had sold out) and conceptual poets. So maybe all the fuss about White Hot Andy being so good is merely because it's political. Maybe poetry that isn't political is not seen as being good by Johnson and his associates in The Chicago School.
