"Additional gender information" was added to the student registration process at Birmingham in 2017. This follow-up question is asked after the "Is your gender identity the same as the gender you were originally assigned at birth?" question. The fields are: Man / Woman / Non Binary / Agender / Gender-queer / Gender-fluid / Other (Please specify)

It seems as if I will have to ask this question twice in two different places. As the HR systems team keep saying that for tax purposes it must be male/female.

Dear John,

Whilst I think we are a long way as a society from being in a position to jettison the identity boxes we have created, I do think it is important, especially for equality practitioners, to be mindful of all the (unintended) implications and consequences they carry with them. I'm attaching a very interesting thought piece (a few years old but still very relevant) on this subject for those who are interested.

Dear All,
I know I'm going to get shot down in flames but - in these days when many "equality" issues are not simply binary classifications [gender, sexual orientation etc], I sometimes wonder why 'authority' needs to try to pigeonhole us?  Does it really need to know, and does it need to fit us into specific boxes?

I suppose we can all opt to say "prefer not to say"

Dear colleagues,
At Anglia Ruskin, we are currently working on our equality data collection processes and have found that our data suggests that students are likely to be misunderstanding the question on gender identity. Below is the question which HESA recommend along with the coding and answers to map responses to:
Does your gender identity match your sex as registered at birth?
01 Yes
02 No
98 Prefer not to say

ECU's guidance offers a lot of different options of appropriate monitoring questions (P65 in particular is helpful), but we are mindful that these do not map to HESA categories and although reporting to HESA on this characteristic is not mandatory, we would like our process to sit within the HESA reporting specifications, if possible. We've also found the question to be quite restrictive as it doesn't offer a non-binary/gender queer option.
We decided that we should provide an explanation of this question for those students who are flummoxed by it and this is also proving tricky. We have also considered asking an additional question on this but are wary of muddying the waters further and adding to the length of the process - which is already too long.
I wondered if anyone else had come across this issue and if you could offer some advice or share your explanations of the question, if you have them?
