Dear colleagues,
The issue of assessment re-takes/repeats is under discussion in our institution. Our current regulations state that students retaking a module (after failure at first sitting and again at resit) must repeat all attendance and assessments for the module, including components which they have previously passed, and that the module mark is capped at the pass mark.
However, some have expressed the view that this is unfair and unnecessary, as the students have already demonstrated that they have met the learning outcomes for the passed component(s), so should not be repeating them.
Of course, this might be further complicated if the module assessment (eg tasks, LOs, component weightings) has changed significantly in the meantime.
I would be interested to hear how these discussions have gone in your institutions and if/how you have managed to resolve this issue.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
John
