Postdoctoral Positions in Molecular Physics, Universities of Nottingham and Southampton
Postdoctoral positions funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in the UK are available in the research group of Professor Katharine Reid at the University of Nottingham (one position)
and Dr Russell Minns at the University of Southampton (one position). These positions are associated with a collaborative project entitled “Photoelectron interferometry as a structural and dynamical probe”. The project will investigate the influence that
molecular alignment induced by short laser pulses has on the anisotropy of photoelectron images that have been obtained following the ionization of small polyatomic molecules. As part of the project new means of analysing such images will be developed. The
experiments will use ultrafast laser systems together with velocity-map imaging spectrometers; a significant part of the project will also involve data analysis and interpretation. The project is part of a collaboration with Professor Henrik Stapelfeldt at
Aarhus University, and opportunities to undertake experiments in Aarhus and at advanced light source facilities such as
Artemis and
FERMI are expected. Candidates must have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in molecular physics or physical chemistry and must have experience with high vacuum apparatus and with operating ultrafast laser systems. Experience with nanosecond pulsed lasers, velocity
map imaging, inversion techniques and Matlab programming will be an advantage.
The posts are available from June 1st, 2018 (negotiable) and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of three years.
The Universities of Nottingham and Southampton value diversity and are committed to equality of opportunity.
