*Are you willing to help us build the social science research agenda for
Lewy-Body Dementia?*
Lewy Body Dementia is a form of dementia that comprises both Dementia with
Lewy Bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia (PDD) and accounts for
around 1 in 10 of dementia diagnoses. Its symptoms include fluctuating
cognition; recurrent visual hallucinations; REM sleep behaviour disorder,
and one or more spontaneous features of parkinsonism. Due to its
heterogeneity, patients’ experience is usually described as a ‘roller
coaster ride’ with management often falling between speciality-driven
services.
Social science research has either focused mainly on Alzheimer’s dementia,
or preferred to replace the biomedical model with a psychosocial model of
dementia that emphasises personhood. While this may have been necessary to
establish a distinctive social science approach to dementia, it is now time
to focus on how a specific, if heterogeneous, illness experience interacts
with the institutions of biomedicine, health care services and patient
organisations.
In this, *Sociology of Health and Medicine Foundation* funded Workshop, we
aim to build research capacity in the social sciences on Lewy body
dementia. The workshop will comprise of state-of-the art talks and
researcher-led working groups on key areas of research: biomedicalisation,
health care services, and patient and carer experience.
We are inviting social science researchers at any stage of their career,
patients and carers to contribute to shaping the social science research on
Lewy-Body dementia. This will include a position paper on the social
science research agenda on LBD to be submitted to a peer reviewed journal,
and the possibility of being part of an externally funded research project.
Please send to the contact email below, a 250 word description of your
interests in this area of social science research. We do not require
applicants to already have expertise in Lewy-Body dementia. We specially
encourage postgraduate and early career researchers to apply. There are 8
Postgraduate bursaries available to assist with travel costs.
*Deadline: 29 March 2018, 5 PM GMT*
This whole day workshop is free – including catering - and will take place
in Durham on the 18 April 2018.
*Organisers: Tiago Moreira (Durham U.), Claire Bamford (Newcastle U.) and
Grant Gibson (Stirling U.)*
