medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I sadly report that on March 14 the historian Tore Nyberg, without
question the doyen of the study of the Birgittine order, died at the age of
87. Since 1971 Nyberg taught Medieval History at the University of Southern
Denmark in Odense. Already with his dissertation Birgittinische
Klostergründungen des Mittelalters, that he defended at the University of
Lund in 1965, Nyberg set standards. His subsequent edition and analyses of
the documents from the three south German Birgittine monasteries
Gnadenberg, Maihingen and Altomünster (Dokumente und Untersuchungen zur
inneren Geschichte der drei Birgittenklöster Bayerns, 1420-1570, Munich
1972-74) are unsurpassed. In addition to his keen interest in Saint
Birgitta and her order Tore Nyberg published on a variety of medieval and
early modern topics, often focusing on the Baltic and Nordic Countries. We,
the members of the Extraordinary Sensescapes project, researching the
sensual world of late medieval Birgittine nuns, are grateful that Tore
Nyberg became part of our group. In 2015 he joined us on a study tour of
German monasteries that led us to Altomünster only weeks before its
dissolution. Most recently Tore helped to save the Altomünster library, now
in Munich.
The University of Southern Denmark published an obituary on their website:
