The BBC moved to a video encoding system called the Video Factory in about 2013 which prioritised HTML5, there’s a blog here:

But they still do deliver some flash: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/internet/entries/bf4a2ad0-f4a4-43fb-9693-9d2523da0063

And James is right, some legacy content will still be in flash … there is a page here that auto-detects your browser preference for HTML 5

Bear in mind that the BBC delivers video to 100s of different devices including TVs, set top boxes etc, so they need to handle a lot of complexity. But there’s no intrinsic reason why broadcast video should be any different to non-brioadcast video - it’s all just moving pictures!

Yes, I spotted that from time to time. I believe it's legacy material that they haven't converted. Whether that's a conscious decision, or whether they plaits to, I'm not sure. But clearly the viewfinders number will be reduced even further

I'll be the person to ask what may be an incredibly dumb question: BBC iplayer periodically decides I haven't got Flash and demands that I reload it, most recently last night as I was trying to watch Beard/Schama talk about Civilisations at the National Gallery. Is the BBC therefore strangely miles behind, or is TV broadcast a different thing that still has flash as standard?
