Hi everyone,

Yes, I agree with you all. I know there’s a wide variation, I know that this is a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question, I know that the amount of consultancy / back-end set up / highly customised front-end / asset creation etc. will wildly change the costs… all I was hoping for were a few examples of what other people had done so that I could begin to put together my own expectations of what’s a sensible ball park budget to set.

I’m at the point just before you set a budget and send it out to companies to see what comes back - that point where you do research and see what other people have done and how much it cost.

I thought that this group might be able to share some examples so that I can get sense of what type of expectations I should set for myself. I’m not asking anybody to give me a precise figure that I should put in my brief, just wondering if there are some examples out there I can use as a starting point.

That’s a much better way of doing it :-)

Id be tempted to flip the question. Set your budget then see what kind of solution you can get for the money.

Hi Charlotte

I think the issue re pricing is very much about what do you want. Touch screen interactives vary enormously, and correspondingly the budgets used to produce them vary enormously.

If you could clarify what it is you hope to achieve then I'm sure someone on this mailing list will have done something similar.

Are you talking about static content pages that are navigated using the touch screen, is the content text and images, do you want to include videos, do you want to provide searchable collections information, or do you want an interactive game. Or is part of the work required to clarify what you want in which case you will also need to pay for consultancy time which can increase the cost significantly.

If you want to provide access to collections information, do you already have a collections management system that you can export the information from to import into the standalone system?

Do you already have the content online? If you do, is it possible to create a standalone version? Conversely do you want to re-use the content you produce for the kiosk on your website?

There are cheap options out there like using powerpoint but my experience with the low cost solutions is that you still need someone with some IT knowledge to support staff to create the content.

Best wishes

Linda

Hi folks,

Thanks for the many helpful suggestions on solving the technical challenge – though I still don’t feel much closer to having an idea of budget (I will reply to a few of you off-list as suggested).

In answer to a couple of the comments made, all of this work will be out-sourced, but we need to have an interface that allows editing capacity in-house by staff who are not technical specialists later on. The hardware is stand-alone Windows PCs running an 8 year old version of Windows (I’m not in the office today to check which version) – BUT the hardware and OS can be updated. The only part that is not going to change any time soon is that the machines are completely standalone and not on the network.

If anybody has experience of commissioning this kind of project and would be willing to share what they did and how much it cost it would be enormously helpful.

Thanks again!

Charlotte

Thanks John, that’s really cool :-)

And I should pimp your “DIY museum tutorials” page for those that haven’t seen it: http://johnsear.com/diy-museum-tutorials/

Getting into a solution which is open and available rather than bespoke and tied down to a specific company or agency seems to me to be one of the critical decisions here. Powerpoint ticks that box, so does WordPress if you do it right. Other solutions ..not so much.

When we start working with clients, I’m always at pains to say something along the lines of “we hope you’ll always love us, but we want you to be in a position to hate us in a year and be able to go find someone else who has the knowledge and skills to adapt what we’ve done”.

Since we're suggesting free 'Touchscreen Interactive' solutions - you can build these very quickly in PowerPoint (or free OpenSource alternatives). Here's a tutorial that covers the basics:

http://johnsear.com/tutorial-interactive-touchscreen/

It works entirely offline and will run off budget Windows tablets. You can also do the same on Raspberry PI (easiest way via exporting to pdf) - although there are some limitations.

Hi folks,

I’m writing a design brief for a redevelopment of our interactive touch screens in the Polar Museum. I’ll be looking for somebody to develop a user-friendly CMS that our team can use to update content as required (albeit on our currently non-networked machines) and for them to design an attractive user interface for our visitors to interact with.

I know I’m in ‘how long is a piece of string’ territory, but I don’t have a good sense of what type of budget to attach to the project. I wondered if anybody could share examples of similar projects and what the budgets were for them so that I can figure out a sensible figure to work to.

Thanks very much,

Charlotte
