As a one-time commissioner of Flash stuff, and big fan of zombie technology, I’d be really interested to know what strategies museums have for keeping & preserving their own Flash content – interactives, games, etc -- converting to HTML5 is a (not insignificant) investment in the continuing relevance and usefulness of that content, but what can we do with stuff that we’ve made and would just like to keep?

Keeping the binaries themselves probably isn’t a problem – but what about compatible Flash players? Is this stuff destined to be lost in our own difficult-to-access archives?

Jeremy – how do you tell ‘Flash capability’ from your analytics and what does that indicate about then user? That they don’t have it currently enabled, or that they couldn’t even if they wanted?

Danny

PS

It makes me a little bit sad that Young-Hae Chang’s work has now all been converted to video rather than being available in native Flash.

We’ve seen this shift with a lot of our clients over the last few years. There’s some great FLASH content now languishing in the backwaters of the internet. This is content that used to be some of the most popular content. An update of existing content FLASH content to HTML5 can have a massive impact of site traffic and can be low risk, because you already know the content is popular.

In fact I wrote a blog about this a couple of years ago: http://www.fishinabottle.com/great-fire-of-london/

It’s a shame that people aren’t able to enjoy the great FLASH content that’s still out there and an update to HTML5 introduces mobile support and opens the content up to a much wider audience.

I have nothing to offer here, but just in case anyone is still failing to feel the urgency of abandoning Flash…

When we relaunched our site in January and moved all our video and audio to delivery via HTML5 rather than Flash, I was very happy that at long last we were able to serve the 50% of users who had no Flash capability and who would now be able to use our media. But then I went and checked those figures, because I’d not really looked for a year. And in that year, users who had Flash enabled had dropped from 50% to 16%. So by the time of our relaunch, 84% of our users were unable to stream audio or video. Flash is in freefall and you best considered dead. Don’t hang out with zombies.

Cheers, Jeremy

Hi all

Looking for a freelancer to help us with some conversion from Flash to …not Flash (html5 I guess?)

Simple interactives, games, usual “must be mobile responsive” stuff.

Anyone recommend anyone? Ping me off list, or on.

cheers

Mike
