Music and Literature: Innovations, Intersections and Interpretations
Edinburgh Napier University, Edinburgh
14th - 15th June 2018
Supported by the Institute for Music Research

As a rising academic field, scholars are exploring the relationship between music and literature through both traditional research and more contemporary practice-based analysis and interpretation. From exploring the links between text and music in opera or the rhythmical pulse of poetry, through to the subtler integration of musical structures in literature or the retelling of tales through music, the intertwining of the two disciplines crosses a wide variety of creative outputs. This conference therefore seeks to provide a platform for the exploration of the innovations, intersections and interpretations of the relationship between music and literature.

We are inviting proposals for papers, or performance-presentations, of 20 minutes duration with 10 minutes for questions. Proposals for 3-paper panels (1.5hours including questions) are also welcomed. Postgraduates, ECRs and those without institutional affiliation are particularly encouraged to submit.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  * Music on the stage and its connection to the text
  * Role of music in literature / literature in music
  * Setting of literature to music
  * Structuring of music based on literary sources
  * Structuring of literature based on music
  * Historical relations between music and literature
  *   Composer-authors
  * Literary responses to innovations in music and performance

Abstracts of 300 words should be submitted by no later than Friday 30th March 2018. Decisions will be communicated by Friday 6th April 2018.

There are eight bursaries of £50 each to assist with travel and attendance for postgraduate students or early career researchers without an academic affiliation.
